Obituary

Arthur Bates, known affectionately by his grandkids as "the grumpy old troll," age 80, of Jacksonville, Arkansas passed away August 28, 2025. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on April 26, 1945 to the late Arthur and Elvona (Lyon) Bates.

Though he wore a tough exterior — a true macho man — those who knew him well knew his heart was gentle, kind, and endlessly devoted to the people he loved.

A proud veteran, Arthur served his country as an aircraft electrician in the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years with the title of Master Sergeant. After his service, he continued his career as an industrial electrician, where his passion for working on airplanes never faded.

He found joy in the simple things: the twang of classic country music, the harmonies of old-fashioned gospel, and the timeless grit of a good western. These comforts were part of the fabric of his life; woven into the memories he leaves behind.

Above all, he loved his family fiercely. Whether offering a helping hand or a joke, he showed up in the ways that mattered most. His legacy lives on in the laughter his family now shares, the stories told around tables, and the countless lives he touched with his strength and warmth.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by son, Jeffrey D Bates; and sister, Ann Burris

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kay Bates; children, Scott Bates, Andrew (Jennifer) Bates, and Amanda (Matthew) McElhannon; grandchildren, Morgan, Kylee, Aubrey, Tristan, Avery, and Jeffrey; and nieces, Kathy Burl and Becky Harrington.
