Barry D. Comer, also known as "Papa Bear", 81, of Jacksonville, entered the gates of Heaven on the morning of Monday, August 8, 2022. He was born July 26, 1941, in Battle Creek, Michigan to the late David S. and Beatrice (Worthington) Comer. In addition to his parents, Barry was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley A. Comer; and brother, Gordon Comer.

He was a Believer in Jesus and an active member of Bayou Meto Baptist Church. Mr. Comer was a proud Vietnam Veteran that retired from the Air Force in 1981 after twenty-two years of service. Later he had a second retirement from the City of Little Rock as a computer programmer.

Mr. Comer had a long and adventurous life. Shortly after graduating high school he joined the Air Force. He traveled the world in the Air Force and made friends everywhere he went. He stayed active after retirement including continuing his education and graduating from Arkansas State University in 1990, traveling the country for fun, family reunions, bowling, B4K (Benefit4Kids) charity events, hunting, and fishing. In recent years he was well known for morning Facebook posts letting everyone know how proud he was to be an American. He never met a stranger and was well known for his smiles and hugs. He loved Jesus, his country, his family, and his friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Tammy (James) Ward and Kelly (Kent) Earhart; honorary daughter, Sharon (Richard) Gentry; brother, Brian (Debbie) Comer; sisters, Eldene (Don) Gillentine and Robin Comer; girlfriend, Patty Wolcott; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He also had many friends that he adopted as his family that will miss him dearly. He always called anyone with the last name of "Comer" his cousin.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 12, 2022, at Bayou Meto Baptist Church in Jacksonville with Brother David Talbert officiating. Visitation will be the evening prior, Thursday, August 11, 2022, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the church. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Bayou Meto Baptist Church or B4K.org.
