In Loving Memory of Dewey A. Gentry Jr.
January 15, 1938 – December 7, 2024

Dewey A. Gentry Jr., 86, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on December 7, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. He was born on January 15, 1938, in Osceola, Arkansas, to Dewey Gentry Sr. and Ruby Lee Hisaw. Dewey's life was shaped by his father's love of sports, and he carried that passion throughout his life.

Although he knew he was not the best athlete on the team, Dewey played basketball and football at Osceola High School, where he served as captain of the football team and earned All-District Honors his senior year. His heart, however, belonged to baseball, and he was mentored by St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Lefty Alexander. Though he was offered a tryout for summer ball with the Kansas City Royals, his mother's wishes kept him closer to home, a decision that set him on a different but equally meaningful path.

Dewey attended the University of Arkansas, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering and met the love of his life, Marie Hampton. They married and shared an incredible 66 years together, building a family and a life full of love, laughter, and adventure.

After college, Dewey answered the call to serve his country. As a Captain in the U.S. Army, he played a critical role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, leading surface-to-surface missile operations. He transitioned to the Army Reserves while pursuing a career in the oil industry, following in his father's footsteps. Dewey's dedication and expertise earned him numerous accolades, including multiple Salesman of the Year honors during his career with Esso, Gulf Oil, and Chevron.

Above all, Dewey cherished his roles as a husband, father, grandfather, and mentor. He was a devoted father to his two children, Gynger and Mike, and poured his heart into teaching and mentoring others. He shared his passions with his son Mike—coaching baseball and soccer, then umpiring and refereeing games together.  Dewey served as Vice President of the State Soccer Association. He also found a way to be involved with his daughter Gynger in dance. Dewey served as the Treasurer for Ballet Arkansas and as the Stage Manager for The Nutcracker productions. Whatever he did, Dewey gave his all to everything he touched.

Being "Papa" was one of Dewey's greatest joys. He shared endless moments of love and laughter with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether fishing with Brooks, going to the movies with Christian and Grace, sharing a burger and jokes with Mason at the golf course, or watching fireworks in the back of the Tahoe, Dewey made every moment special. His laughter, wisdom, and deeply rooted love will forever be cherished by his family and those fortunate enough to know him.

After retiring, Dewey found his dream job working at Rebsamen Golf Course, where he shared his love of golf with his grandson Mason. Dewey's dedication to his craft and love for teaching extended to the many young lives he touched as a coach, where he inspired his players to embody discipline, commitment, and teamwork.

Dewey is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Hampton; his children, Gynger Forbess (Nick) and Mike Gentry; his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brother, James Gentry (Cathey); and his sisters, Doris Barrentine (James) and Carole Abbott (Steve).

In honor of Dewey's legacy, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. His commitment and wisdom have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
