Obituary

Donald Eugene Meredith, 77, of Jacksonville passed away January 23, 2024. He was born May 26, 1946 to the late Clarence Eugene and Sara (Plummer) Meredith. In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by his brother, James Meredith; and son-in-law, Sean Golden.

Eugene was most known for owning and operating Meredith Heating and Air for forty years. Before opening his own business, Eugene worked as a highly skilled mechanic for twenty-two years at Jacksonville Dodge Service Center. Because of his work at Dodge, he exclusively purchased Dodge and Chrysler vehicles for his family.

Eugene's love of God led him to become a founding member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Jacksonville, where he was an active member, Sunday School teacher, and deacon for forty years. Eugene then became a member of Maddox Road Baptist Church where he was music director and cook. Singing and music was a talent of Eugene's, and he used that gift by singing in the Gospel Tones Quartet for thirty years.

In his spare time, Eugene could be found working on his cars, watching nature videos, Western movies, or gospel concerts on TV, or cooking his favorites: popcorn, cheese dip, chili, and tacos. Above all else, Eugene was a pillar in the Jacksonville community - he had an outgoing personality that drew people in, and has never met a stranger. Everyone was a friend of Eugene's. He had an infectious laugh and was notorious for dishing out his famous jokes on the fly to anyone willing to listen.

Those left to cherish the memories of Eugene include his wife of eleven years, Donna Meredith; children, Melissa (Larry) Silverman and Alecia Golden; step-son, Jeff Bailey; siblings, John (Frances) Meredith Sr., Virginia Yeager, and Fred (Linda) Meredith; grandchildren, Leah Silverman, Hailey Golden, Max Golden, Chance Golden, Mason Bailey, and Liam Bailey; great-granddaughter, Faith Bailey; and several extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
