Gerry Wayne
Crabb
Jul 22, 1945 — Apr 29, 2023
Cabot
Gerald "Gerry" Wayne Crabb, 77, of Cabot, passed away April 29, 2023. He was born July 22, 1945 in Staten Island, New York to the late Clifton Noah Crabb and Juanita Jean (Colvin) Russell. Gerry was welcomed into Heaven by his parents; his son, Scott Andrew Crabb; and sister, Rita Delores Crabb Deleo.
Those left to cherish their memories of Gerry include his beloved wife, Barbara Ellen Woodell Crabb; daughter, Amy Elizabeth Crabb Morrow; daughter-in-love, Soobin Crabb Schenks; grandchildren, Jasmine Ellen Crabb, and William "Will" Scott Vailes; bonus grandchildren, Braelyn and Hannah Morrow; brothers, William Burton "Bill" (Maren) and Clifton Alan "Al" (Diane) Crabb; three generations of nieces and nephews, as well as extended family members and friends.
Helena was Gerry's "hometown" and he understood its complexities were as deep as the River that rushes by it in an escape to the Gulf. When he returned to teach there in 1972, bringing a wife and young son, he was thrilled to become a colleague of former teachers, and particularly to become a friend of Charlene Hickey, his highly admired former Spanish teacher. He soon became a member of the Jaycees and embarked on serving his community in multiple volunteer and leadership roles as well as in the classroom and later as Central High School librarian. One of his proudest achievements was being involved with AETN in establishing DELTANET, which brought internet capability to Phillips County and the local schools. He was a member and served as Elder of Helena First Presbyterian Church. Tennis and Helena Little Theater were two of his personal outlets. Following the shock of their son's sudden death in 2001, the Crabbs retired earlier than planned and in 2005 moved to a new "home" in Cabot to be near family. They never had to list their "Perry Street home", selling it to a Teach for America colleague. For a time, rooms were rented to other Teach for America teachers, creating a sort of teacherage. This gave the Crabbs great pleasure as they felt it represented continued support for the community's youth and would continue to contain laughter, perhaps a few tears, and stimulating, supportive voices. In Cabot, Gerry presented a lower profile in the community. He has happily focused on being a grandfather, puttering in the yard, book clubs, and attending lectures and cultural events at local colleges.
The Crabb family would like to extend a special heartfelt thank you to the caregivers at Arkansas Heart Hospital, Conway Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, Conway Regional Home Health, and Baptist Springhill Hospital whom Gerry considered new friends as well as helpers.
