James Alex Smith, 86, of Sherwood passed away April 3, 2023. He was born December 11, 1936 in Prattsville, Arkansas to the late Boyd and Dicie (Keesee) Smith. James' hobbies included fishing, hunting, and missionary work. He was a foster parent to many. There were few people who didn't know him as "dad" or "grandpa"; he was a very compassionate and tender hearted man.

James is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his daughters, Pamela (Dwight) Steed, Jamie (Chris) Mitchell, and Darlene (Jay) Dickman; sister, Betty Mayers; grandchildren, Daniel Steed, Grant (Jamie) Steed, Jamin (Laura) Mitchell, Lynsey (Stewart) Dunbar, Steven Dickman, Kimberly Lett, Joshua Dickman, and Jenny Pratt; beloved nieces, Linda Mayers, Lisa Haddock, and Ginger Hood; 18 great-grandchildren; as well as many other beloved family members.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home. A memorial gathering will take place immediately following the service, also at the funeral home.
