James C. "Buck" Buchanan, 91, of Cabot, AR passed away with his children by his side on Thursday, October 3, 2024. He was born February 26, 1933, in Dewitt to the late William Henry and Francis Buchanan. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by Dixie, his wife of 60 years; his siblings, Billy (Jeanette), Mary Francis Black (Robert), Spencer (Ethel), Archie (Cathy), and Bobby (survived by Lisa of Stuttgart); his adopted son, Meredith Averett (survived by Pam of Jacksonville); 3 little blessings that did not survive childbirth; and grandson Arthur Cave.

He is survived by his brother-in-law David Gillman(Lisa) of Plano, TX; his children, Barbara Beth Buchanan of Cabot and William "Bill" Buchanan (Cassandra) of Spring, TX; his grandchildren, Tamela Cain (Dallas) of Gravel Ridge, Orville Cave (Kitty) of Alexandria, VA, Kristin Buchanan of Spring, TX, and Jacob Buchanan (Rachel) of Salt Lake City, UT; Great Grandchildren, Jordan Roessler (Amber) of Memphis, TN, Isaiah Cain (Ashley) of Hensley, Noah Cain (Darla) of Lonoke, and Benjamin Cain of Gravel Ridge; Great-Great-grandson, Kaison Cain of Lonoke;  and a host of nieces and nephews.

After playing football and completing his college degree at A&M Monticello, Buck spent some time in the army before returning home to start his career years as a teacher and coach in Jacksonville for both the junior high and high schools. His unit (HHC 336 ORD BN) was then activated to Vietnam where he served as a First Sergeant. After his activation he moved to Temple, TX where he again taught and coached.  He ended his career years working for the State Department of Education within the MSRTS division (Migrant Student Record Transfer System). After retirement he continued working as a substitute teacher and volunteer coach again for Jacksonville at both the junior high and high schools.

Buck believed in taking care of the people around him. His specialties were hosting gatherings and random phone calls just to check in. He was active in the Jacksonville Lions Club in his early years and an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville for many years. He also enjoyed sports, woodworking, competitive bridge, and playing games on his iPad for hours at a time.

There will be a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at First Presbyterian of Jacksonville (1208 West Main Street, Jacksonville, AR 72076). The Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, again at the church with Mary Jane Fischer officiating.  Entombment will follow at Rest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum (7724 Landers Rd, North Little Rock, AR 72117).  In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville.  Arrangements by Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home, 501-982-2136.
